The entire terrorist plot in the first episode seems to have been nothing more than a MacGuffin to get this group of characters from Point A to Point B. Again, Nightfall isn't doing enough to make use of the Halo license. Unfortunately, it's looking more and more as if this is all we're getting out of the show. I was really hoping "Lifeboat Rules" would offer another twist to the basic survival formula established last week. It's just a shame he isn't given more to work with.

Actor Steven Waddington is more effective than the rest when it comes to conveying the tension and danger of this precarious situation. It's becoming less and less likely that Nightfall will make use of the potential it has in Aiken. This episode offered no new insight into the character beyond a brief glimpse into his past on Earth. Last week delivered the big revelation that Aiken was once a SPARTAN-II Commando who was somehow discharged and allowed to transition to a more normal life. It's also disappointing to see so little development when it comes to Colonel Aiken. The actors get credit for pulling off that illusion, but not much else. Nightfall's Installation 04 scenes were actually filmed in Iceland, meaning the actors were running around in freezing temperatures in their shirt sleeves pretending they were trapped on a sweltering-hot space station.

I can respect the physical toll the production must have taken.

Seeing Horrigan and Locke discuss their desperate plight, you'd think they were arguing over what pizza toppings to order rather than how to stay alive and whether executing the Alerians is justified. The bland writing and dialogue are certainly the main culprit here, but the actors aren't doing anything to elevate the material either. At least these two stand out in that regard.

The show has done such a poor job of distinguishing these characters that I have to consult a Wiki guide just to remember most of their names. I certainly wasn't moved when the ONI team started dropping. The characters are so dull and wooden and one-dimensional that it's all but impossible to become invested in their plight. Unfortunately, there's no emotional impact to any of this. We even saw the Hunter Worms claim their first victims in this episode. The stakes have been set, and the consequences for failure are well established. All of that forms a solid foundation for this show to follow. But between the harsh terrain, barely breathable atmosphere, interpersonal conflicts, and the presence of a technology-hating swarm of Hunter Worms, that task is far easier said than done. Now that our ragtag band of ONI soldiers, Sedran militia, and Alerian smugglers have become stranded on the ruins of Halo Installation 04, everything hinges on their ability to make it to the Alerian's ship and send a distress signal. Little changed this week in terms of direction or quality.
